Brothers Andrzej and Maciek are highlanders. After the dead of his father, caused by Andrzej, Maciek takes back his beloved Bronka. Andrzej leaves the family house. During his journey he meets mysterious Schaffer, an anthropologist and climber. His new friend shares with him his knowledge on mountains, climbing techniques and origins of highlanders. When the war starts, Andrzej returns to Zakopane. Convinced about his mythical origin, he encourages highlanders to collaborate with Germans. In his words, this may safe them from the dramatic consequences of war. Andrzej and Maciek suddenly stands on two different sides of the conflict. Their confrontation will be bloody and painful.
